The large‑scale multi‑degradation rig
The large‑scale multi‑degradation rig

The MORE project is accelerating the development of next‑generation marine materials for offshore renewable energy (ORE). By improving the durability, reliability, and performance of materials in harsh ocean environments, MORE supports the deployment of stronger, longer‑lasting, and more cost‑efficient energy devices.

What We’re Delivering

  • Advanced multi‑degradation testing through newly built small‑ and large‑scale test rigs now entering operation.

  • Harmonized material qualification guidelines for the ORE sector.

  • Validated material solutions for two real user cases: Wavepiston and CorPower Ocean.

Why It Matters

Our work aims to:

  • Reduce the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) by 5–10%.

  • Improve sustainability by lowering material use.

  • Strengthen Europe’s supply chain for offshore renewable technologies.

Progress So Far

  • Small‑scale test rigs (SSMD1 & SSMD2) are fully operational; testing is ongoing.

  • The large‑scale multi‑degradation rig is operational and undergoing upgrades to expand testing capabilities.

  • Baseline testing has been completed for stainless steel, superduplex, and Inconel.

  • Harmonized testing procedures are established for stainless steel and progressing for superduplex.

  • Development has begun on a recommended practice for ORE‑specific material testing.

Key Insights

The project’s work with industrial user cases has highlighted the diverse loads ORE systems must withstand — corrosion, biofouling, structural stress, and tribological wear — reinforcing the need for tailored material solutions. The emerging methodologies and testing protocols developed in MORE are laying the groundwork for future industry‑standard tribology guidelines.
